From the book, Chapter 6. 7 × 8 = 5 × 8 + 2 × 8 = 40 + 16 = 56. In the array, the 7 rows split into 5 rows and 2 rows; nothing is lost and nothing is counted twice. That is the distributive property, which the area model in Chapter 7 uses for bigger numbers.
