Your Kid’s Math Homework · Chapter 10

Adding Fractions with Strips

You can only count pieces of the same size. Cut both fractions into equal pieces, then add the tops; the bottom names the piece and doesn’t change.

Opens on Chapter 10’s example: 2/3 + 1/4 = 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12.

Enter the numbers from the worksheet, then press Show me.
From the book, Chapter 10. 2/3 + 1/4: thirds and quarters are different sizes, so cut both into twelfths: 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12. Adding tops and bottoms gives 3/7, which is less than 2/3 alone, so it can’t be right. For 4 1/4 − 2 3/4, count up: 1/4 to 3, 1 to 4, 1/4 to 4 1/4, so 1 1/2.
