Dice Lab

Roll a handful of dice, take their average, and repeat thousands of times. With one die the chart is flat; average a few and a bell appears, narrowing as you add dice.

Choose how many dice to average and how many throws, then press Roll.
From the book, Chapters 6 and 8. The averages pile up around 3.5, and their spread shrinks with the square root of the number of dice: 1.71 for one die, 1.21 for two, 0.76 for five, 0.34 for twenty-five. That is the central limit theorem and the square-root law, happening in front of you. Each press rolls fresh dice, so the chart changes a little every time; that wobble is the point.
